CAC APPROVED NGC AU55 1869-S $10

Only 6,430 1869-S eagles were made and the estimated survival rate is very low with as few as 50-60 pieces known. There are probably not more than a dozen known in AU and this date is very rare in properly graded AU55 to AU58. This is a High R-7 issue in Uncirculated and the finest I know of is an NGC MS61 which sold for $43,200 as Heritage 2/18: 4276.

Most 1869-S eagles have been stripped of their color and the present example shows uncommonly rich natural colors which favor rich orange at the centers framed by flashes of crimson at the edges. The surfaces are clean for the issue with just a few shallow ticks seen in the obverse fields. This is clearly one of the most cosmetically appealing survivors of this date.

Another CAC approved AU55 1869-S eagle—this one graded by PCGS—realized $11,163 in the Heritage 2017 ANA sale. A non-CAC NGC AU55 which was similar in appearance to the example I am offering here realized $12,925 as Heritage 2014 FUN: 6889.

This coin is likely in the Condition Census for the issue yet it remains relatively affordable; a situation seen with other With Motto eagles from San Francisco as well.

CAC has approved three in this grade with three finer.
