RARE 1862-S EAGLE, PCGS EF45

The 1862-S is among the rarest eagles from the San Francisco. Despite a comparatively high mintage of 12,500, this issue was heavily melted and today it is likely that no more than 50-60 pieces exist. This date is unique in Uncirculated (a PCGS MS61 which sold for a record-setting $103,500 as Heritage 4/11: 5427) and there are fewer than 10 properly graded AU pieces known.

This piece is fresh to the market and it is well struck with a surprising amount of luster. Both sides show nice medium russet and pale rose toning which is unusual for this issue; most 1862-S eagles have been stripped and are bright as a result. This example is also far cleaner than is typical for the date and grade with just a few shallow marks in the left obverse field worth a mention.

The last PCGS EF45 1862-S eagle was sold all the way back in the Summer of 2011; long before Civil War gold became popular and prior to the establishment of Liberty Head eagles as a series which was avidly collected. In December 2017, Heritage sold an NGC EF40 for $9,600;n my opinion, while nice, that coin was actually a VF35.

I haven’t offered another 1862-S in some time and this is an especially nice piece.
