RARE NGC AU58 1856-O EAGLE

Variety 3.

Despite a low mintage of 14,500 the 1856-O is among the most overlooked of all No Motto eagles. It is tied for the third rarest No Motto eagle from New Orleans and it is a really rare coin properly graded AU58. I am aware of just three in Uncirculated: all graded MS60 and all off the market for the foreseeable future.

Most higher grade 1856-O eagles lack natural color and this is a welcome exception with pleasing warm sunset-gold and reddish hues which appear deeper on the obverse than on the reverse. The surfaces are very clean without a single deep mark noted and this is highly unusual for this issue. The strike is sharp, the luster beams through the aforementioned color and the overall eye appeal is far above average for the issue.

The last AU58 example of this date to sell at auction was a not especially nice PCGS piece which brought $12,925 as Heritage 6/17: 3845.

The 1856-O eagle is basically unobtainable finer than AU58 and this is among the best examples I have ever handled.
