RARE NGC AU55 1855-O EAGLE

Variety 1.

The 1855-O is among the rarest No Motto eagles from New Orleans with an estimated 100-125 known in all grades from an original mintage of 18,000. There are fewer than two dozen in AU grades with most at the lower end of this range and any properly graded AU55 to AU58 is quite rare. Only two Uncirculated 1855-O eagles are known to me and both are PCGS MS61 coins in the Tyrant Collection.

This piece is totally fresh to the market and it is one of the few truly original 1855-O eagles I have seen or sold. Both sides show attractive deep russet toning and this piece is almost certainly not from an overseas bank as are many of the higher grade New Orleans eagles of this era which have become available in recent years. There are a few noticeable abrasions in the lower right obverse field which are almost certainly what kept this coin from stickering at CAC.

The most recent APR for an NGC AU55 1855-O eagle is $13,200 for a piece from the S.S. Republic which brought $13,200 as Stack’s Bowers 2018 ANA: 4214. A PCGS AU55 was last sold in the 9/15 Legend sale where a piece brought $8,519. No AU58 has sold at auction since early 2014.

This date is missing from most No Motto New Orleans eagle sets and this example is far better than average for the grade.
