VERY RARE AND IMPORTANT GEM PROOF LA PURCHASE/McKINLEY GOLD DOLLAR, PR67CAM

A total of 100 Proofs were made both for this design and its counterpart the LA Purchase/Jefferson gold dollar. They were all placed in wax paper envelopes and affixed to printed cards. Most have survived but this issue is often seen with signs of mishandling and resultant hairlines.

This is the sole example of this issue graded PR67CAM by PCGS and it is likely among the very finest known. It has stark black and white contrast but not quite enough frost on the portrait to call it Deep Cameo. The surfaces are fully reflective and lack any signs of handling or hairlines. There are a few tiny marks below the first S in STATES and the second A in AMERICA which appear to be “as made.”

PCGS has also graded one piece PR67 without a Cameo designation (it was graded prior to the introduction of this modifier) and it sold for $46,000 as Heritage 4/06: 5198. Among more recent comparables, Heritage 2017 ANA: 4236, graded PR66DCAM by PCGS, brought $37,600.

I have long believed that Proof Gold Commemoratives were undervalued and while it isn’t easy to call a $38,000 coin “underpriced,” these seems like a much rarer coin that other comparable regular issue Proof gold pieces.

An extremely important coin!
