POPULAR AUGUST BECHTLER GOLD DOLLAR, PCGS/CAC AU55

K-24. 27 Grains, 21 Carats with Plain Edge.

This piece was struck at the private mint of the Bechtler family and the various gold dollars, quarter eagles and half eagles from this facility saw active circulation in North Carolina, even after the Charlotte Mint opened in 1838. The K-24 variety is the most available issue from the Bechtler Mint and it is often collected alongside the regular issue Charlotte gold dollars.

This is a beautifully toned example with deep reddish and crimson colors which are a bit more vibrant on the obverse than on the reverse. As with many K-245 gold dollars, this piece shows some waviness in the planchet—as made—which I think adds to its charm. There is not much circulation evident and this piece is desirable due to its uncommon degree of originality.

The last K-24 gold dollar graded AU55 by PCGS and approved by CAC to sell at auction brought $3,819 as Stack’s Bowers 4/13: 1213.

Here is a chance to own a really attractive example of an important piece of Southern numismatic lore for under $5,000.

CAC has approved 13 in this grade with 34 finer.
