EXCEPTIONAL NGC/CAC MS65 1872 GOLD DOLLAR

Only 3,500 business strike gold dollars were made in 1872 and this date is actually much harder to locate in Gem than other comparable issues from this era. Interestingly, it is actually harder to locate in MS65 and MS66 than it is in MS67 due to a small hoard of superb pieces.

This coin should probably be designated as PL due to its overall reflectiveness. It has wonderful 100% natural rose and green-gold color on both sides and it has fantastic overall eye appeal. A few wispy lines in the left obverse field preclude a higher grade but this coin wouldn’t look out of place in an MS66 holder.

Only one MS65 1872 gold dollar has sold at auction since early 2013 and it was a non-CAC PCGS example which realized $6,463 as Legend 7/18: 421.

I haven’t seen a nicer 1872 gold dollar PCGS/CAC MS67+ Duckor coin which realized $14,100 in the 2015 ANA sale.

CAC has approved two in this grade with five finer.
