VERY RARE PROOF 1869 GOLD DOLLAR WITH CAC APPROVAL

Just 25 Proof 1869 gold dollars were made and around 12-14 are known today. Unlike other Proof dollars of this era, the 1869 was not well-made and not a single piece designated Deep Cameo is known. This is an extremely rare coin in Gem with just two or three pieces graded PR65 extent and none finer. Despite this issue's obvious rarity, it does not command the date premium it deserves.

This reflective example has not been processed as have so many Proof gold coins of this era and it displays nice natural orange-gold hues with a decent amount of contrast noted between the devices and the fields. A single hairline on the obverse can be seen jutting down from the base of the neck and there is a mint-made lintmark on the reverse beneath the 9 in the date.

This exact coin has appeared for sale three times at auction between 2013 and 2014 and it has fluctuated wildly, ranging from a low of $10,869 (cheap!!) to a high of $15,070.

Proof gold dollars offer real opportunity for the savvy collector seeking true rarity at comparatively reasonable levels and truly rare coins such as this 1869 seem like great value at less than $20,000.

CAC has approved this one coin in PR64CAM with two finer for this designation.
