RARE PCGS MS66 1866 GOLD DOLLAR

With a mintage of just 7,100, the overall rarity of the 1866 is comparable to some of the Civil War issues but this issue doesn't have the compelling Civil War date of issuance to push its demand.

This is an early die state with prominent mint-made diagonal striations seen beneath rich satiny luster. As often seen, there are clashmarks on the reverse but these are not as prominent as on other 1866 dollars. Perhaps the best feature of this coin is its dynamic rich orange-gold color which turns to gunmetal bluish-grey at the central reverse.

Only two PCGS MS66 examples of this date have sold at auction (this is one of them; see below for provenance) since 2011 and these realized $9,400 and $9,200, respectively.

Ex Stacks Bowers 2016 ANA where it realized $9,400..
