SUPERB GEM 1864 GOLD DOLLAR, PCGS MS67

The 1864 is a very popular Civil War gold dollar which, like its counterparts the 1863 and the 1865, is sometimes seen in Superb Gem Uncirculated due to small numbers of coins being saved by contemporary collectors and dealers. There are at least a half dozen known in the MS67 to MS68 range, and the single best is an amazing PCGS MS69 which sold for $77,625 in the Superior 2/2005 auction.

This light green-gold and rose example shows typical die finishing lines on both sides as do most Civil War gold coins. It is sharply-struck from slightly clashed dies, with some weakness on the 18 in the date caused by a bit of mint-made roughness in the planchet. There are some light scuffs in the right obverse field visible under magnification and an interesting die crack at 11:00 on the obverse which I can’t recall having seen on many other 1864 gold dollar.

An NGC MS67+★ brought $18,000 as Heritage 2018 FUN: 5976.

If you are putting together a world-class set of gold dollars, it is unlikely that you will be able to locate an 1864 which is finer than this.
