VERY RARE GEM 1856 UPRIGHT 5 $1 WITH CAC APPROVAL

Upright 5 variety; as noted by PCGS.

There are varieties of 1856 gold dollars with a Slanting 5 and an Upright 5. The later is considerably more scarce and I regard this as among the most overlooked of all gold dollars. It is very scarce in MS63 to MS64 and Gems are very rare with fewer than a half dozen known. The finest I am aware of is the Heritage 2011 ANA: 5329 coin, graded MS66 by NGC, which realized a record-setting $20,700.

This variety is almost never seen without detracting marks on the surfaces and this example is notable for its silky smooth fields. Both sides show rich natural orange-gold hues and have unbroken mint frost. The eye appeal is exceptional for the grade and for the date.

The Duckor coin, sold as Heritage 2015 ANA: 4254 was graded MS65 by PCGS and approved by CAC; it brought $8,813. There are two APR's for PCGS/CAC MS66's (7/15 and 12/16) and both realized $16,450.

This piece represents the finest available quality for the issue and it would fit comfortably into a world-class set of gold dollars.

CAC has approved 6 in this grade with only 1 finer (MS66).
