CHOICE AU 1856-S GOLD DOLLAR, PCGS/CAC AU55

S/S Mintmark Variety; not indicated on the label by PCGS.

The 1856-S is the only Type Two gold dollar from this mint and the only Type Two issue fro any facility produced in 1856. It is only moderately scarce in the higher circulated grades but only a small percentage of those graded are CAC-worthy.

This is a later die state with the crack at 7:00 on the obverse now extending into the portrait. Both sides are immaculate and nicely toned with natural medium russet coloration.

The last CAC approved PCGS AU55 1856-S gold dollar to sell at auction brought $3,878 as Goldberg 6/16: 1402. A non-CAC AU58 which was low-end for the grade brought $3,840 as Heritage 6/19: 4042, while a much nicer PCGS 58 realized $5,400 as Stack’s Bowers 6/18: 7.

I would suggest that the new owner of this coin send it to PCGS to have it designated as the 1856-S/S variety.

CAC has approved seven in AU55/55+ with 29 finer. This is the sole 55+ at either service as of 8/19)
