GEM SLIDER 1853-D GOLD DOLLAR: NGC/CAC AU58

The 1853-D is scarcer than the 1849-D and 1851-D but not as difficult to locate as the 1850-D and 1852-D dollars. It is rare in properly graded AU58 and very few exist with natural color and choice surfaces.

This is quite possibly the single nicest AU58 example of this date in existence; certainly it is the best I have ever offered. Both sides show splashes of deep reddish-gold which is heaviest at the lower obverse. The strike is bold save for the central obverse with a full date and mintmark. The surfaces are essentially free of marks and the eye appeal is far above-average for the date and grade.

No CAC approved 1853-D gold dollar graded AU58 by either service has appeared at auction in recent years. The most recent sale for an NGC AU58 is Legend 1/18: 259 at $4,113.

This would make an ideal type coin for the collector who is searching for a special Type One Dahlonega gold dollar at less than $5,000.

CAC has approved six in this grade with just one finer (MS66).
