NICE PCGS/CAC AU53 1851-D GOLD DOLLAR

The 1851-D is among the more available gold dollars from Dahlonega but it is far less available than the common 1849-D. It is not often seen in AU grades with choice surfaces and natural color.

This coin would likely grade at least AU55 were it not for a shallow mark above Liberty’s head. Both sides show attractive russet color with deeper hues seen on the obverse. At 7:00 on the reverse, an incuse star from the obverse adds to the charm of this issue.

No AU53 1851-D gold dollar from either service has sold at auction since an NGC coin brought $2,760 in October 2009. A non-CAC PCGS AU55 sold for $3,290 as Heritage 2/17: 4887.

This is a perfect type coin for the collector seeking a nice, affordable Type One dollar from Dahlonega.

CAC has approved two in this grade with 16 finer.
