WELL-PRICED PCGS/CAC AU50 1877-CC DOUBLE EAGLE

This is a numismatically significant issue as it is the first Type Three double eagle from Carson City. While not really that scarce in the lower AU grades, only a small percentage of the 1877-CC double eagles graded AU50 to AU55 have been approved by CAC.

This bright yellow-gold example is very “meaty” for the grade with excellent overall detail and a majority of the luster intact. This coin would likely have graded a few points higher were it not for a few wispy lines in the left obverse field.

Only three PCGS AU50 1877-CC double eagles have sold at auction since early 2011 and just one was approved by CAC; it realized $6,000 as Stacks Bowers 2019 ANA: 2456.

This example represents good value for this date.

CAC has approved 11 in this grade with 45 finer.
