PCGS MS62 1807 BUST LEFT HALF EAGLE

BD-8, R-2.

1807 is an interesting transitional year for half eagles with both Capped Bust Right and Draped Bust Left designs known. The Bust Left variety is available in the lower Uncirculated grades without much effort, but this date becomes reasonably difficult to locate in MS62, and it is scarce finer.

This example sports light green-gold color and it has excellent luster for the issue with rich mint frost seen on both sides. There is a notable absence of marks with just a few shallow luster breaks on the obverse; the reverse is very choice. A small patch of mint-made adjustment marks is placed on the obverse border from 10:00 to 1:00 and this is, of course, mint-made.

The most recent auction record for this date in PCGS MS62 was a very cheap $10,869 set by Legend 5/18: 703; this coin was very low-end and its price was reflective of this. A more realistic number was set by DLRC 6/17: 1248 which brought $15,500.

A nice 1807 Bust Left in the next grade up will cost over $20,000 and for many collectors, MS62 is a sweet spot for this popular early half eagle type.
