NGC MS60 1831 QUARTER EAGLE

BD-1, R-4.

The 1831 is the date seen most often of this type, but it is still scarce in all grades with an estimated 125 or so known in total. Examples in the higher circulated grades and lower Uncirculated range are not often seen but are in demand due to their relative affordability.

This has been off the market since 2007 and it is an unquestionably “new” coin lacking the obvious wear and luster breaks seen on coins at this grade point. Both sides have a light green-gold hue and are somewhat deeper towards the border. The obverse is mostly reflective while the reverse shows a bit more frost and there are a lack of detracting marks.

No MS60 1831 quarter eagle has been sold at auction since 2004. In 2017 and 2018, an NGC MS61 brought $18,000 and $17,625, respectively.

This is priced at around what a nice AU58 would sell for but it is a superior coin for the grade.
