RARE PCGS MS62 1854-D $1.00

The 1854-D is numismatically significant as the final Type One gold dollar from Dahlonega. There were only 2,935 struck and this is the rarest Dahlonega dollar of this design. There are around a dozen known in Uncirculated, mostly in the MS60-62 range, and this date is truly rare in properly graded MS62.

This is one of the few 1854-D dollars I have seen which hasn’t been processed. It shows pleasing medium russet colors on both sides and it is well detailed for the issue with a full date and sharp hair. There is one old hairline in the left obverse field while the rest of the coin is clean and vibrant.

No PCGS MS62 1854-D gold dollar has sold at auction since June 2010 when Stack’s sold a coin for $13,225. An NGC MS63 brought $42,000 in March 2018 while the likely finest known 1854-D brought $64,625 in April 2013.

The PCGS population of 11 graded MS62 is almost certainly inflated by resubmissions especially when one notes that the last one to sell at auction was over eight years ago.
