VERY SCARCE NGC MS64 1852-O GOLD DOLLAR

Variety 1.

The 1852-O is the second scarcest New Orleans gold dollar after the 1850-O. It is not often seen in MS64 and almost never in grades higher than this. I am not aware of more than four to six Gems, all of which are off the market in tightly-held collections.

This frosty example is uncommonly well-struck with nice natural light yellow-gold and orange colors over choice, vibrant surfaces. There are some light scuffs in the upper left obverse field, and the reverse shows clashes at the center which have slightly weakened the impression of the date.

Since late 2008, only two MS64 1852-O gold dollars have sold at auction, both in NGC holders. The most recent record is Heritage 12/10: 4245 at $47,475.

This is an uncommonly nice example of a conditionally rare New Orleans gold dollar.
