RARE PCGS MS62 1851-D $1.00

The 1851-D is the second most available Type One gold dollar from this mint but it is much scarcer than the 1849-D. It is almost never seen in grades above MS62.

This is a very early die state with almost no clashmarks, and as a result the overall detail is sharper than normal for the date. The surfaces are frosty and lightly marked with pale to medium green-gold hues. A scuff over the DO in DOLLAR limits the grade.

There have been four APRs for this date in PCGS MS62 since 2012, and they have ranged from a low of $7,050 (1/13) to a high of $8,050 (2/12). None have sold since March 2015.

This example is as nice as a few of the MS63 1851-D gold dollars I have seen, and it is very good value for the advanced collector as a nice MS63—if available—would cost in excess of $12,500.
