IMPORTANT CONDITION CENSUS PCGS MS63 1850-D GOLD DOLLAR

The 1850-D is a rarity in Uncirculated with around a dozen pieces known, mostly in the MS60-62 range. In properly graded MS63, this date is extremely rare with just two or three known to me. The best I am aware of is an MS64 in the Auraria Collection which I purchased for $34,500 in the Heritage 4/06 auction.

This coin has been off the market for at least two decades and it represents one of the finest known 1850-D dollars. It is well struck from slightly clashed and rotated dies. The only area of weakness is on the curls but some definition is visible in this area. Both sides are bright and frosty with pale orange-gold color on both sides and an absence of all but the most minor marks. A small, thin grease stain at the right side of the O in OF on the reverse serves as identification.

No PCGS MS63 1850-D gold dollar has ever sold at auction. An NGC MS63 brought a strong $35,250 as Heritage 9/16: 13922, and that was the first APR for this date in this grade since 2007.

This is an important coin for the advanced collector of Dahlonega gold dollars.
