UNDERRATED PCGS MS61 1854-O HALF EAGLE

Variety 1.

The 1854-O is the second most available No Motto New Orleans half eagle but it is rare and much underrated in Uncirculated. There are no more than eight to ten extant in Uncirculated, and only two of these grade higher than MS62 (a pair of MS63s).

The first thing you notice when you examine this coin is its lovely natural color, and this is unusual as most 1854-O half eagles have been lightened. Both sides show rich yellow-gold and greenish colors with bursts of fiery reddish-gold at the borders; more so on the reverse. There are some scuffs consistent with the grade in the fields and the right obverse field shows a very faint grease stain which terminates at the twelfth star. This piece is unquestionably “new” and lacks any actual wear on the high spots.

The only auction record for this date in MS61 is DLRC 1/18: 8351 at $13,250; this piece was CAC approved. You have to go all the way back to 2009 for the next two records; two sales at $9,775 each.

Uncirculated 1854-O half eagles are almost never offered for sale and the savvy specialist should recognize the importance of this nice PCGS MS61.
