RARE AND IMPORTANT PCGS/CAC MS61 1842-O $2.50

Variety 1.

The 1842-O is the third rarest New Orleans quarter eagle after the 1845-O and the 1843-O Large Date, but it is the second rarest in Uncirculated with just six to eight accounted for; mostly in the MS60 to MS62 range. I am aware of three or four which graded MS62 to MS63, and one which grades MS64.

This frosty yellow-gold example shows a below-average strike for this issue with considerable weakness at the centers; especially on the reverse. It is fresh and original and would likely grade at least a point higher were it better struck. Both sides show a few scattered marks, none of which is deep or detracting.

The last PCGS MS61 to sell at auction was all the way back in November 2011 when Stack’s Bowers 11/11: 9223 realized $8,625.

This date is missing in most advanced collections of New Orleans quarter eagles, and it represents an important opportunity for the sophisticated specialist to obtain a real condition rarity.

CAC has approved two in this grade with none finer.
