RARE 1855-O $20 GRADED EF40 BY PCGS

The 1855-O doesn’t have the “sex appeal” of the 1861-O or the 1879-O double eagles but it is rarer. In fact, it is the third rarest twenty dollar gold piece from this mint after the 1854-O and 1856-O. There are fewer than 100 known and the number of examples which I would define as “choice for the grade” is likely less than a dozen.

This date saw more circulation than other New Orleans issues of this era but it is unusual to find an 1855-O with as much wear as this piece. However, the wear is well-dispersed and honest with nice overall surfaces. Both sides show even natural deep russet-gold color and this is extremely appealing. There is a tiny edge bump on the obverse at 9:00 while an old reverse mark within the central device (to the right of the eagle’s head) is well-concealed and can be easily overlooked.

The last PCGS EF40 to sell at auction was all the way back in June 2005. In May 2015, an NGC/CAC EF40 in an older holder brought a strong $51,406. The last two PCGS EF45s to sell at auction realized $43,200 in June 2018, and $43,475 in April 2017.

There are very few 1855-O double eagles available at this price point and even fewer which are legitimately attractive. An important coin for the specialist.
