SCARCE PCGS/CAC MS63 1899-O EAGLE

The 1899-O is the scarcest of the later date With Motto eagles from New Orleans. It is not often seen above MS62, and properly graded MS63 to MS64 coins are rare. The single finest known is a PCGS/CAC MS68+ which I regard as the single finest known New Orleans gold coin of any date or denomination.

This choice, high-end coin would likely have graded MS64 were it not for some scuffs on the jaw of Liberty. The surfaces are otherwise very clean and frosty with pretty orange-gold and greenish colors on the obverse; the reverse shows deeper toning, likely the result of resting against an envelope or a coin cabinet for many years.

Two CAC approved PCGS MS63 1899-O eagles were sold at auction in 2018 and these realized $9,000 (August) and $9,600 (March).

This date is not often seen in grades higher than MS63, and if one were available it would likely represent an overbuy for most New Orleans eagle specialists.

CAC has approved eight in this grade with fiver finer.
