SCARCE PCGS AU58 1881-O EAGLE

Variety 1.

The 1881-O eagle is scarce in properly graded AU58, and it is rare in Uncirculated with fewer than a dozen currently known. Most of the coins graded AU58 by both services show excessive detracting abrasions and have poor overall eye appeal as a result.

This piece shows attractive rich natural orange-gold color which is strongest at the obverse border. Both sides are slightly reflective and there is very little actual wear seen. The surfaces are lightly abraded with nothing which is overly detracting. On the reverse, there is a mint-made spot below the left side of the W in WE and another spot in the right field.

The last PCGS AU58 1881-O eagle to sell at auction brought $6,325 as Heritage 2011 FUN: 7095. Only four have sold since 2009.

After years of neglect, the scarce 1880-1882 New Orleans eagles have become popular with collectors. At current levels they still seem to be reasonably good values.
