RARE BORDERLINE CONDITION CENSUS PCGS AU58 1850-O $10

Variety 1.

The 1850-O eagle is typically seen in lower grades. It is sometimes available in the lower range of AU, but it becomes rare in properly graded AU55 to AU58. This date is extremely rare in Uncirculated with just two or three known, including a glorious PCGS MS65 which I sold to a specialized collector in early 2017.

This light green-gold example shows minimal wear which is primarily confined to the high spots of the obverse. There is a significant amount of luster remaining, and the surfaces are much cleaner than normal save for a few minor scuffs in the left obverse field.

Only one PCGS AU58 has sold since 1995 and it brought $12,650 as Heritage 10/10: 4878; this coin was CAC approved. Another CAC approved piece, graded AU58+ by PCGS, sold for $18,800 in the Heritage 2014 ANA auction.

This date is essentially unavailable any finer than this and with the only two indisputably Uncirculated 1850-O eagles off the market in tightly-held collections, it is unlikely that a nicer 1850-O will be available to the discerning specialist.
