SCARCE 1849-O $10

Variety 1.

The 1849-O is a far scarcer date than most collectors realize, and it ranks as the third rarest No Motto eagle in higher grades after the 1859-O and the 1841-O.

This piece shows a typical strike for the date with noticeable weakness on the radial lines in the stars but the reverse is actually fairly sharp. Both sides show pleasing medium green-gold color and there are hints of luster in the protected areas. Most importantly, the surfaces lack the deep, detracting marks found on nearly every known 1849-O eagle.

The last PCGS AU50 1849-O eagle to sell at auction brought $5,463 all the way back in July 2005, while an NGC AU50 realized $4,465 in June 2014. The last PCGS AU53 was sold in October 2012.

This is a really difficult date to locate in any grade over EF45 and I estimate that just 15-19 exist in AU, as well as two or three in Uncirculated.
