IMPORTANT CONDITION CENSUS 1847-O $2.50 GRADED MS63 BY PCGS

Variety 5.

As many as two dozen 1847-O quarter eagles exist in Uncirculated but virtually all of these are in the MS60 to MS62 range, and properly graded MS63s are very rare. Only two have been graded in MS63 by PCGS, with another two in MS64 and none finer.

This piece is well-defined on the obverse and slightly weak at the central reverse, but it is still sharper than most 1847-O quarter eagles. The obverse shows the beginning of a bisecting crack while the reverse shows extensive clashmarks which I haven’t seen on many other examples. Both sides are frosty with light yellow-gold color. There is some mint-made roughness in the planchet at the obverse border from 4:00 to 9:00 which doesn’t detract.

There are two auction records for this date in PCGS MS63 since 1999 and they appear to be for the same coin; in March 2012 and October 2011 it brought $14,950.

I have only handled one finer 1847-O quarter eagle than this (an NGC MS64) and I believe this piece is comfortably in the Condition Census for the issue.
