RARE UNCIRCULATED 1882-O $10

Variety 1.

The 1882-O is a rare date in Uncirculated with around ten or so known. Virtually all of these are in the MS60 to MS61 range, and virtually all are characterized by extremely choppy surfaces.

This is a totally natural example with pleasing original deep orange-gold color on both sides. The surfaces lack the intense, detracting marks seen on most 1882-O eagles, although there are a few noticeable ticks on the upper left obverse. This coin is absolutely 100% “new” with no wear on the high spots, but there are enough marks on both sides to grade this as assigned by PCGS.

Only two PCGS MS60 1882-O eagles have sold at auction since the end of 2010. The most recent record is Heritage 2/18: 4311 (which was approved by CAC) realized $12,000, while Heritage 2017 FUN: 6928 brought $8,225.

This date has become fairly easy to locate in grades up through AU5,5 but legitimately Uncirculated pieces remain rare and there aren’t likely to be many located in grades higher than MS60 in the coming years.
