RARE UNCIRCULATED 1860-O EAGLE

Variety 1.

The 1860-O eagle is numismatically significant as the final No Motto issue from this facility. Only 11,100 were produced, and while this date is fairly easy to procure in Extremely Fine and even the lower About Uncirculated grades, it is rare in Uncirculated with an estimated seven to nine known.

This bright green-gold example is uncommonly reflective and why it couldn’t be designated as “prooflike,” the obverse is more reflective than normal for the issue. The surfaces are appreciably abraded with the depth of the reflectiveness on the obverse making the marks appear more severe than they actually are; the only really detracting one is a scrape in the left obverse field.

No PCGS MS60 1860-O eagle has ever sold at auction and the last NGC MS60 to cross the block was sold all the way back in May 2008. A PCGS MS61 realized $22,325 as Heritage 1/15: 4336 while an NGC MS61 brought $28,200 as Heritage 9/16: 14148.

This date is offered for sale in Uncirculated only when great collections are offered and this represents an important opportunity for the specialist.
