IMPORTANT PCGS MS61 1851-O $10.00

Variety 1.

The 1851-O eagle is very common in grades up through AU58, but it is rare and very much underappreciated in Uncirculated. There are just nine to ten known in Uncirculated, with most in the MS60 to MS61 range. The finest I know of are a pair of PCGS MS64 coins.

This piece is fresh to the market and it shows lovely deep natural green-gold color on both sides. The strike is very sharp save for the radial lines in the stars which are, as often seen, flat. Both sides are very frosty and show almost no marks which break into the surfaces. A small depression in the field near star three is shallow and mint-made. The overall appearance is decidedly above-average for the issue.

Only two PCGS MS61 1851-O eagles have sold at auction since 1995. The more recent record is Heritage 1/15: 7212 at $18,800, while back in April 2010 Heritage sold another piece for $12,650.

This piece qualifies as a Condition Census example for the issue, and I haven’t handled a finer 1851-O eagle since I sold an NGC/CAC MS62+ in 2014.
