SCARCE PCGS/CAC 1845-O $10 GRADED AU55

Variety 2. Large over Small Date.

The 1845-O is a fairly common date in the No Motto New Orleans series but it is scarce in properly graded AU55, rare in AU58, and very rare in Uncirculated with just seven or eight known. This specific die variety is very scarce in higher grades and it is now recognized by both services as a “Repunched Date” which commands a premium when offered.

This is a very choice coin for the grade with natural green-gold color which changes to a vibrant orange-gold towards the borders. The strike is sharp, the surfaces are clean and the overall appearance is excellent.

Only two PCGS AU55s have sold since August 2010. The last CAC approved PCGS AU55 1845-O $10 to sell at auction brought $6,613 as Heritage 4/12: 6702. A nice NGC AU55 without CAC approval but designated on the holder as an “84/84 VP-003” realized $8,813 as Stack’s Bowers Rarities Sale 5/16: 103.

This coin represents excellent value for the collector with good taste but without the budget to afford the $25,000-30,000 required to obtain a legitimately Uncirculated 1845-O eagle.

For all varieties, CAC has approved three in this grade with six finer.
