In late 2012, Douglas Winter Numismatics sold the Vasquez Rocks Collection of gold dollars. This gallery features those coins, their descriptions, and what they sold for, as a visual reference guide.

1849 Open Wreath PCGS MS65 CAC

Picture 1 of 69

Large Head, L on neck. This is the more common of the 1849 Open Wreath gold dollar varieties and it is quickly identifiable by the position of the coronet tip. The 1849 Open Wreath with L is common in the lower Uncirculated grades but it is less available in Gem than the common 1851-1853 issues. It is, however, a tough coin in Gem. This is a vibrant, frosty example that to the naked eye seems better than its PCGS grade. A closer looks shows a few minor obverse scuffs in the fields but this coin’s exceptional luster and pleasing medium green-gold hue makes it a first-rate Gem. Sold: $4950
