The 1857 is less scarce than the 1855 and 1856 double eagles but it is considerably harder to find than the 1858, 1860 and 1861. It is scarce in properly graded AU55 and not often see finer than AU58 to MS61.
This choice example is notable for a lack of significant abrasions and it is a considerable amount of mint frost seen below pleasing medium rose and orange-gold color. It is well struck and a truly appealing coin for the date and grade.
The last CAC/NGC AU55 example to sell at auction was ex Heritage 5/12: 5227 which sold for $3,450.
CAC has approved four in this grade with 14 finer.
