OGH 1838-D $5, PCGS AU58

Winter Variety 1, HM-1, R-3.

If there is a more popular half eagle from this mint, I can’t name one. The 1838-D is, of course, both a one-year type as well as the very first coin issued at the newly-opened Dahlonega mint. It is scarce in the higher circulated grades, and it is rare (and expensive) in Uncirculated.

This coin is housed in an old green label holder. The obverse is very choice with the appearance of a nice Uncirculated coin and it is very lustrous. The reverse has a fairly prominent fresh scrape which runs from the base of the IT in UNITED into the base of the right wing. The strike is quite sharp for the issue while the surfaces lack any significant abrasions.

This exact coin is the sole PCGS AU58 1838-D half eagle to have sold at auction since October 2016; see below for more information.

No other PCGS AU58 example of this date has appeared for sale since this exact coin (see below). DLRC sold a low-end PCGS MS61 for $40,027 in December 2022, while Stack’s Bowers set a price record for the grade when they got $114,000 for a PCGS MS62 1838-D half eagle as 2022 ANA: 5570

Star City Collection of Dahlonega gold and ex Legend Auctions 1/2022: 243 where it sold for $31,725.
